For years, moms (and dads!) have struggled to get in photos with their families. Fortunately, selfies have made it possible to capture more memorable moments together. Of course, taking a great selfie is sometimes a challenge when a baby is involved.

Try these effective tips for taking great selfies with your baby.

Choose the Right Time of Day

Timing is everything when trying to get a great selfie with your baby. Choosing the best time of the day for selfie taking is usually about the lighting situation. However, when you have a baby, it’s all about finding the right time on their schedule.

If you want a happy, peaceful selfie with your littlest family member, take them when your baby is well-fed and well-rested. Give them a bit of time after a nap to wake up and adjust. Try to avoid getting your baby to sit still for a selfie during those hours when they start to get ornery. As most babies operate on some semblance of a routine, you’ll know the best time of day for your situation.

Get Comfortable

The challenge with taking a selfie when holding a baby is that at least one of your hands will be preoccupied. Different ages come with their own challenges. A young baby can’t support their own head, meaning you’ll need to position yourself to hold them up. Older babies get squirmy and risk flinging themselves to the floor.

Get comfortable in a seated or lying position to help prevent any mishaps. Take a selfie in your favorite chair or lay beside your baby on the floor for a cute overhead shot. Always be sure that your baby is safe and secure before positioning your camera to take the shot.

Show Different Perspectives

Get creative when working with your baby selfie angles. Remember that the slight tilted overhead look might not be feasible for your little model. Keeping the camera at eye level and moving it (and yourself) around to get the right angle is your best chance for success.

When taking selfies of your baby, remember to get artistic and creative. A close up of your hands on theirs as you hold them close or a side shot of them on your shoulder are technically selfies, but with a twist.

Try a Mirror

When taking a difficult picture, like group selfie shots or your outfit of the day, a mirror is your best friend. Instead of battling with your front camera, find a mirror with good lighting, and get a fun selfie of you and your baby.

One of the benefits of this approach is that babies love mirrors and are often mesmerized by their own reflection. Use this to your advantage, as it guarantees your baby will be looking where they need to be for a great shot.

Use the Burst Feature

When you find a position that works, don’t make the amateur mistake of taking one photo and checking to see how it worked out. Instead, use the burst feature to capture numerous shots so that you can pick and choose.

This feature will ensure that you get at least one selfie where your baby’s eyes aren’t closed, or they’re looking in the right direction. You’ll also save yourself lots of time by not having to reposition yourselves between single shots.

Let Go of Perfection

Finally, let go of perfection when taking a picture with your baby. They are going to look cute, no matter what. If you’re feeling self-conscious, you can always use an editing app to crop, filter, or add some fun stickers. Relax and enjoy the moment!

With these tips, you’ll be able to get some great selfies with your baby and create lasting memories. Just don’t forget to share your favorites with loved ones on FamilyAlbum! For more information, click here or check out the information at the bottom of this page.
